Introduction
The SR86 is a sniper rifle of German origin. It was developed by Mauser in the mid-1980s to replace the SP66 in production. The SR86 has the same performance has an increased ammunition capacity and a reduced weight.
Design
The SR86 is based on the mechanism of the proven SP66 but is fitted with a very different chassis. The bolt has been redesigned and the chassis has vents to increase cooling. The SR86 has a more compact adjustable thumbhole stock, made out of wood or fiberglass. A bipod and Hensoldt scope are fitted as standard.
Firepower
The SR86 fires the 7.62x51mm NATO or .300 Winchester Magnum round from a 9 round detachable magazine. The short pull bolt action results in relatively fast follow up shots. Accuracy reportedly is very good. The maximum effective range is about 1000 meters.
Users
The SR86 was adopted by various European law enforcement agencies. It attracted more military users than the older SP66, the most prominent user being Israel. The SR86 remains in use but has been out of production for over a decade.
Mauser 86
The Mauser 86SR is the standard version of the Mauser 86 sniper rifle. It was produced with laminated wooden stock and fiberglass stock. The SR86 can be identified from the older SP66 by its much sleeker and dark colored stock. The Mauser 86SD is an uncommon version of the Mauser 86SR that is fitted with a silencer.
